Founder, The Daily Ascent Press
Michael is the founder of The Daily Ascent Press and creator of The Modern Man Collection.
A Life Among Men
For more than a decade, his work as a barber and business owner has placed him in daily conversation with men from different generations, backgrounds, professions, and stages of life. Those conversations, combined with his own experiences as a husband, father, entrepreneur, athlete, and lifelong student, helped shape the questions behind The Daily Ascent:
What does it mean to become a good man? How should a man lead, provide, serve, love, endure, and grow? What does faithful masculinity look like in ordinary daily life?
Formed by Training
Michael’s formation has also been deeply shaped by martial arts. He began wrestling at six years old, started boxing at sixteen, and has spent much of his life training in combat sports, including wrestling, boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts.
Through years of training and competition, including becoming a multi-time state champion, he learned that strength without discipline is incomplete, talent without practice is wasted, and mastery is built through the repetition of fundamentals.
That philosophy carries into The Daily Ascent.
Faith and Discipline
Michael is a follower of Jesus Christ, and his understanding of manhood is ultimately grounded in the call to love God, serve others, carry responsibility faithfully, and place strength under moral authority.
At the same time, he has long been drawn to the simplicity, structure, discipline, intentionality, and craftsmanship associated with the samurai tradition: the belief that even ordinary actions should be approached with attention, respect, purpose, and care.
For Michael, these are not competing belief systems.
The samurai tradition offers a useful model of discipline, practice, craftsmanship, and self-mastery.
Christ provides the highest authority, direction, purpose, and standard.
Why The Daily Ascent Exists
The Daily Ascent was created from the belief that men are not formed through occasional moments of inspiration, but through repeated acts of faithfulness — discipline, responsibility, courage, restraint, love, service, and stewardship practiced over a lifetime.
Michael’s work is dedicated to helping ordinary men faithfully become extraordinary husbands, fathers, leaders, servants, and stewards.
