Day 002
Discipline Made Visible
gratitude
"Discipline is gratitude made visible: it is the way a man honors the gifts he did not earn."
Reflection
It is easy to speak of gratitude. It is harder to live it. A man who says he is grateful for his body and neglects it is not grateful; he is sentimental. A man who says he is grateful for his wife and never studies her is not grateful; he is polite. A man who says he is grateful for his time and squanders it is not grateful; he is merely lucky and unaware.
Discipline is the language gratitude speaks when it becomes serious. It is thanksgiving with sweat on it. The early rising, the honest work, the careful word, the trained appetite — these are not the enemies of joy. They are its architecture.
You did not build the lungs you breathe with. You did not manufacture the day you are standing in. You did not earn the people who love you. To be given so much and to steward it carelessly is a quiet insult to the Giver. So begin small. Choose one gift you have taken for granted, and honor it today with an act of care. Let your body know you are grateful for it. Let your family know. Let your work know. Gratitude that never moves is not gratitude; it is only a feeling passing through.

Which gift in my life am I currently thanking with words and betraying with habits?
Today's Practice
Perform one small, tangible act of care today for a gift you have been taking for granted — your body, your marriage, your work, or your time.

Say thank you with your hands, not only with your mouth.
