The First Kingdom

Before a man leads a family, a company, or a community, there is a smaller and more difficult country waiting for him: his own inner life. Ambition without self-government is a horse without reins — impressive at a distance, dangerous up close. You can build a career and lose your marriage. You can win arguments and lose your children. You can grow influential and stay unfree. Every external kingdom you touch will only be as healthy as the one behind your ribs.

The work is quieter than it looks. It is the pause before you answer in anger. The refusal to check the phone one more time when your child is speaking. The prayer you keep even when no one would know if you dropped it. Self-government is not the loudest virtue and it will never trend. But it is the ground floor of every other one.

The world is loud with men who conquered everything but themselves. Do not envy them. What was surrendered inside eventually shows itself outside. Begin today with the smaller throne. Order your thoughts. Order your appetites. Order your response to what irritates you. That is where the man is made.
