Before the Applause

There is a dangerous bargain available to every man: trade identity for approval. Become what earns applause. Say what keeps you accepted. Wear whatever version of yourself the room rewards. It works for a while. People may even call you successful. But every round of applause makes it harder to hear the quieter question beneath it: Who am I when nobody is impressed?

Titles disappear. Bodies age. Money moves. Careers end. Crowds change their minds. If your identity is built from things that can be taken from you, you will spend your life terrified of losing them. A man rooted in God can lose a title without losing himself. He can be corrected without collapsing. He can be overlooked without becoming invisible.

You are not merely what you produce, earn, lift, own, or accomplish. Those things may reveal something about you, but they cannot carry the weight of defining you. Build from a deeper place. Let your work come from identity rather than forcing your identity to come from work.
