Tell the Truth While Your Voice Shakes

We often imagine courage in extraordinary scenes: battlefields, emergencies, impossible odds. But much of a man’s courage is spent in rooms where nobody will ever call him brave. Telling a friend he is destroying himself. Admitting you were wrong. Saying no when agreement would be easier. Speaking truth when silence would protect your reputation.

Cowardice rarely introduces itself by name. It sounds reasonable. Not now. Keep the peace. It is not worth it. Someone else will say something. Sometimes those thoughts are wisdom. Sometimes they are fear wearing a respectable coat. A man must learn the difference.

Truth does not give you permission to become cruel. Courage and love belong together. Speak clearly. Speak humbly. Speak without the secret pleasure of winning. But when something true must be said, do not require the disappearance of fear before opening your mouth.
