"A man can own more than he ever prayed for and still feel poor if he has forgotten how to notice what is already in his hands."
Reflection
Desire has no natural finish line. There is always another house, another number, another achievement, another version of your body, another man’s life to compare with your own. If gratitude depends on finally having enough, gratitude will never arrive. Enough keeps moving.
The tragedy is that many of the things you hurry past today were once things you asked God for. The wife beside you. The child making noise in the next room. The business that now stresses you. The body that still gets you out of bed. Familiarity has a strange ability to turn miracles into furniture.
Gratitude interrupts that blindness. It does not deny ambition. It purifies it. A grateful man can build without believing his current life is worthless until the next one arrives. Look again. Some of what you call ordinary is answered prayer you have simply grown accustomed to.
Wisdom
Journal
What do I complain about today that an earlier version of me would have considered an answered prayer?
Today's Practice
Write down three ordinary things you would deeply miss if they disappeared tomorrow. Thank God for each one specifically.
Closing Principle
Do not become so hungry for more that you become blind to what has already been given.
