The Man in the Dark

Reputation is the story other people tell about you. Character is the truth that remains when nobody is telling stories at all. The two can live together for years without being the same. A man can appear disciplined and be privately enslaved. He can preach loyalty and entertain betrayal. He can speak of God publicly and ignore Him privately.

The hidden life matters because eventually it stops hiding. Private habits leak into public decisions. Secret resentment becomes a tone. Unchecked appetite becomes a pattern. Quiet integrity becomes steadiness. What you repeatedly practice when no one is watching is preparing the man everyone will eventually meet.

Do not waste energy polishing a reputation while neglecting the person beneath it. Become in private what you hope people believe about you in public. Then reputation becomes less frightening because there is less distance between the story and the man.
