The Enemy Within

Men love to imagine the enemy outside — the rival, the system, the culture, the wife who does not understand. It is comforting because it is distant. It is also usually a lie. The most consistent threat to your life is not out there. It is the man in the mirror at 11 p.m. who says, "Just this once." It is the appetite you refuse to name. It is the pride that dresses up as principle.

Every serious tradition — biblical, philosophical, psychological — agrees on this: the outer battle is downstream of the inner one. What you refuse to face in yourself will eventually organize your life around itself. The undisciplined impulse becomes a habit. The habit becomes a character. The character becomes a fate.

This is not a call to self-hatred. It is a call to honesty. Do not flatter yourself and do not despise yourself — see yourself. Name the impulse before it names you. The man you must learn to defeat is not a stranger; he shares your address. Take him seriously, and much of what looked like an outside war will quiet down.
